Mini-14 vs. AR-15 Accuracy: Results

Set 1

Mini-14, 55gn. AR-15, 55gn. Mini-14, 62gn. AR-15, 62gn.

I had a hard time seeing the first batch of targets and one only showed four rounds; either I missed entirely (unlikely given the visible group size) or put one round through an existing bullet hole (oh please). Regardless, I was unhappy with the test and did it again using larger bullseyes.

Set 2

Mini-14, 55gn. AR-15, 55gn. Mini-14, 62gn. AR-15, 62gn.

This set showed that my accuracy, such as it was, hadn't been thrown off too far by the first targets. The targets were consistent with earlier results, showing the Mini-14 beating the AR in every group, for every bullet weight.

Summary Table

Set Bullet Weight Mini-14 AR
1 55 gn. 1.1 1.4
1 62 gn. 1.8 1.6
2 55 gn. 1.3 2.8
2 62 gn. 1.0 1.8

Such results are unexpected, to say the least. After considering as many factors as I could think about (see the next page), I believe the only conclusion supported by the evidence is that my Mini-14 is about as mechanically accurate as my AR-15 using the selected ammo, and that its nicer trigger gives it the accuracy advantage.
